In 2000, a group of enthusiasts who shared a passion for making and imbibing in wine were inspired to breathe life into an old, run down operation in the small western district of Gomersal. The forty two acres of low yielding vines now deliver a limited yield of Shiraz each vintage, a precious harvest of grapes exhibiting remarkable concentration and intensity of flavour. Working amongst the vines and sampling berries as the growing season reaches climax, picking never commences until the team are completely satisfied that complete ripeness has been achieved.

Minimal intervention, judicious use of oak and maximum flavour are the goals. A range of soils vary dramatically throughout the property. Clay over calcerte and slate bedrock, moving to more weathered slate at the bottom of an ancient glacier. Over the hill, soils are deep, sandy loam and black clays. East to west slopes with predominantly north to south rows, bush vines grow east to west on a south facing slope. This tapestry of terroir infuses subtle complexities in the grapes, which are retained throughout the vinification process and ultimately contribute to the splendour of the finished wines.

Free run and pressings are combined for added colour and structure, components are matured fourteen months in a combination of French and American oak hogsheads.

Burge has taken an active interest for decades in developing and nurturing sites that allow for maximum development of varietal Shiraz characters and concentration of flavour. Burge selects the best grapes, much of the fruit from traditional winemaking families. Fruit is crushed, de-stemmed and transferred to fermenters for a week of vinification. Upon completion of malolactic, batches are transferred to older American and French oak hogsheads for ten months maturation and the final assemblage.

Vinified from parcels of elite Cabernet grapes grown to Grant's Cameron Vale vineyard, planted in the early 1970s, along a fertile area between Lyndoch and Williamstown. A solid backbone of estate grown fruit is enhanced by a further component of splendid Cabernet Sauvignon from the cooler, slow ripening altitudes of Valley Eden. The maturity of site and devotion of the Grant Burge team to their precious vines make a major contribution, clearly evident in the intensity, seamless integration and controlled power of the finished wine.

Unique microclimes and soil permit varietal characters to fully develop, yielding grapes of intense concentration and rich flavour. After crushing and de stemming, juices are vinified on skins for a week, temperatures peak at 26C early on in the ferments before being brought down to 22C. A quarter of the components are left on skins for a month, adding structure and enhancing the colour. Following completion and an extended maceration, parcels are treated to full malolactic in barrel. The assembled wine is then transferred into a high proportion of new and seasoned French and American oak barrels for eighteen months maturation.

Inky black in colour with vibrant purple hues. Dark fruits and blackcurrant are dominant on the nose, with hints of savoury spice courtesy of French oak.
