Merv and Judy Lange are true pioneers of the Frankland River winegrowing region, they planted their first single hectare of Alkoomi vines by hand, way back in 1971. Today, Alkoomi is one of the largest family owned labels in Western Australia. The balmy mesoclimes which surround their salubrious Frankland River property are so similar to those of Bordeaux, heaven sent for the construct of intensely aromatic Cabernet Merlot wines with magnificent structure, elegance and charm.

$2099each $251DOZEN EACH DOZEN From their initial planting, Alkoomi's area under vine expanded throughout the 1980s and 1990s, growth of vineyards has continued steadily, without sacrificing the naturally low yields which produce wines with a concentration of good flavour. Vines are all pruned by hand, harvesting occurs in the cool of morning, usually starting just after midnight to ensure grapes arrive at the winery in top condition. Exclusively estate grown Merlot and Cabernet are picked at healthy levels of Baume off several individual blocks. Parcels are treated to three days of cold soak for extraction of good colour and fine tannin, followed by a course of ferments and a year's maturation in French oak.

Deep red with crimson hues. Bouquets of mulberry, blood plum and cassis meld with attractive crushed violets, notes of mint and spicy oak. Medium to full bodied palate, displaying a complex blend of flavours reminiscent of dark plums and cassis. Fine grained satin textured tannins lead to a lingering finish of cassis fruit supported by lovely spiced oak. Drinking well right now with a rich tomato pasta or juicy steak.

Fruit is sourced from vines up to twenty five years of age and de-stemmed into open fermenters. Parcels are inoculated and vinified at temperatures between 26ËšC and 30ËšC, treated to a careful plunging for the gentlest extraction of colour, flavour and tannins. Pressed and fermented to dryness before transfer to barrel for malolactic. Components are matured in exclusively French oak barriques for over a year, before being racked, assembled and lightly fined.

Dark crimson red with scarlet hue. Aromas of blackcurrant and mulberry spice are complemented by hints of classic Margaret River bay leaf and dried herbs. A rich, supple red wine displaying flavours of cassis and mulberry fruit with an underlying sweet oak spice. The palate persists with its great length of fruit characters, generous and completely integrated, finishing beautifully rounded with fine, powdery tannins.

Three quarters Wilyabrup Old Cab and Young Cab clones, transplanted from the original Houghton Source Block in Valley Swan, the balance of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Selectively hand picked at vintage over the course of a month, gently plunged in open fermenters and matured two years in French oak barriques. A fully ripe red berry bouquet, cherry plum fruit leather and hints of cassis saturate the palate, fine grained tannins in support of a succulent, velvety mouthfeel, super premium oak imparts elegance, complexity and fragrant spice.

Predominantly old vines Old Houghton clone Cabernet Sauvignon, hand picked off the original 1976 estate block at Wilyabrup. Bursting with red and black currant notes, vivid dark cherries and plum, leatheryness and violet, its comely perfumes of anise and cigar box precede a flood of fruit on the elegantly spiced oak palate, all supported by silky smooth, fine grained tannins. A wine of amazingly disciplined power and astonishing length, a measure of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc introduces wonderful complexity.

Harvets from the north are invariably sweeter and fuller in flavour, particularly the Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Batches are gently pressed off and basket pressed for completion of malolactic, followed by a year's maturation in a selection of new and seasoned French oak.

Fruit is harvested at optimum ripeness and held for a term of cold maceration. Twelve days of ferment are treated to daily pumpovers and juice aeration, extracting excellent colour and tannin. Batches are pressed off skins for malolactic and a year's maturation in a selection of seasoned and new French oak, to be followed by assemblage into the final wine, with a view to achieving a soft and elegant style of Great Southern Cabernet Merlot.

The cooling influence of the Indian Ocean permits complex flavours to develop while warm days ripen the tannins. Picked at optimum ripeness, all vines are closely husbanded, harvest is carried out to healthy levels of baume. Fruit is destemmed but not crushed and each batch is handled separately. Treated to a cold maceratation and moderate ferment, yeasts are introduced to increase texture and aromatics. Following vinification and extended maceration, the wine is matured in a selection seasoned and new French oak barriques.

Vibrant red with purple hues. Mulberry, cassis and capsicum nose, multi black fruit characters, fragrant with blueberry and cassis. Mulberries, cassis and plum flavoured palate, supported by chocolate oak notes and exquisite licorice tannins. Delicious to drink young for its primary fruit characters, to accompany beef stroganoff, dukkah crusted lamb, mature cheddar or romano porcini tortellini.

The propitious vines are enthused by the scents of lofty karri tree blossoms, to yield harvests of the ripest, most flavourful grapes, intense with ripe brambleberry characters and redolent with the piquant cologne of local gums. Castelli make a Cabernet Merlot accord which expresses the magnificence of the Great Southern mesoclime, its lifted bush fruit aromaticness, velvet tannins and divine French oak, make a match to the finest gourmandise, game bird recipes, pate, pork and veal terrines or emmentaler gratin.

Fruit is crushed and held for a term of cold soak, inoculated to yeast strains F15 and FX10, followed by a rather warm vinification for a fortnight on skins at temperatures of 25C to 30C. Ferments are treated to pump overs twice daily, gentle tannin extractions and a course or two of rack returns. Upon completion, batches are transferred to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barriques for a judicious spell of maturation.

Grapes are gently destemmed, cold soaked and vinified in static fermenters at 22C to 26C over the course of a week, pumped over thrice daily. Upon completion, batches are held on skins for several days to soften the tannins, batches are pressed and transferred to a combination of finely coopered oak barrels for a term of age to enhance the complexity, while being treated to a series of rackings over the course of a year. Catching Thieves is ultimately assembled with a view to creating a seamless Cabernet Merlot wine whilst retaining the ebullient Margaret River bramble berry opulence.

Brick crimson red colour. Leafy aromatics, redcurrants and wild black berry, spice over supple chocolate oak. A medium weight palate featuring delectable flavours of currant and mulberry, plums and lovely cassis notes, juicy acidity, persistence and length. A touch of cinnamon complements the fruit, as it rests upon a soft but supportive tannin structure.
