Chrismont Cabernet Merlot 2000
King Valley vic
Vintage 2000 began with an early budburst starting speculations of an early vintage. Cool days and nights with adequate rainfall allowed vines to grow unstressed and flowering and fruit set was still early. As the warmer Summer months developed, the weather remained cool and dry creating a long, even ripening phase. This resulted in most varieties being picked later than expected and quality levels - especially in reds – to also be higher than average.

The fruit was harvested cool during the night to assist with the cold pre-ferment maceration. The individual musts were inoculated with yeast and fermentation allowed to reach 25 degrees during the peak for both. The Cabernet and Merlot were allowed 14 days on skins to help extract and develop their respective optimal tannin levels. The wines were aged in new and used American Oak barriques for 12 months before blending the two and bottling. Baume: 13.4 Alc/Vol: 13.7% pH: 3.62 Acid: 6.15 g/L.

Chrismont La Zona Pinot Grigio 2009
King Valley
Available by the case dozen only
With a climate and landscape so similar to Piemonte, Tuscany and Alsace, the King Valley's long summer days enable the Pinot Grigio to achieve complete flavour ripeness which gives lovely fruit richness to this stewed apple, quince and pear flavoured wine. "More gris than grigio with grilled peach, burnt butter, and some matchstrike, cooler raspberry smells too. Attacks with good weight, gets sweetish, baked apple fruit piled onto lovely tingly acidity. Has quite a chewy texture and an austere, dry finish. This is alternative white alright!" -Financial Review

The major force behind the vigour of Chrismont wines is the soil and microclimate within which the property resides, positioned optimumly at the heart of the spectacular King Valley. In the days when wine production was rapidly expanding and tobacco was in decline, contracts were offered to grow grapes. The first blocks of Chrismont were transformed from tabacco to vines in the 1980s. As a mutation of the deep purple Pinot Noir and the greenish yellow Pinot Blanc, Pinot Grigio runs a spectrum of ruit characters that vary according to terroir and climes. The grape is particularly well suited to the Chrismont King Valley vineyards where cool nights allow elegant cool climate characters to emerge. Alcohol 12.5%

Colour is medium straw with hints of copper. The nose carries lifted aromas of pawpaw and white peach with an underlying layer of spiced custard and cream. A luscious rounded front palate with flavours of custard apple and toasted almonds, acid is firm and structured with a dry and lasting finish. A sensuous white wine to accompany light game, pasta or desserts with a fresh fruit orientation. "Lively, rollicking white with fine figure and dandy chewing gum flavours. Peach and lemon flavoured winegums, lozenges of banana and rose petal, hazelnut oil and peanut brittle. Personality plus, so highly personable with most any faire, try it with roast crackly pork, pheasant or pannacotta!" -RieslingRider.com
Chrismont La Zona Sangiovese 2008
King Valley
Available by the case dozen only
Such an immense wine is the Sangiovese, so named for it's affinity to the blood of ancient Gods, mythically speaking of course. La Zona engages you with its deep, vibrant red colour, redolence of black cherries and spice on the bouquet, followed by a brazen savouryness which makes it perfect with robust cuisine. The acidity balances well with the generous round, fleshy front palate and velvety tannin structure that carries through to a dry, firm finish. A perfect food match for La Zona would be a rustic slowly cooked Tuscan dish, such as Stufato alla Fiorentina!

Colour is deep red. Nose of black cherries and spice with lifted notes of violet. "The dusty, meaty, brandied-cherry aromas are beguiling and rather pinot-like. In weight, it’s light to medium-bodied with light tannins, while the flavours are savoury and softly seductive, firming up on the finish. Unusual; a wine of character and real drinkability!" -Gourmet Traveller, "I’m a sucker for sangiovese at the best of times, especially those from Victoria’s King Valley. Chrismont is surprisingly generous of fruit for this variety so it’s very appealing. Soft maraschino cherry fruit flavours are matched by mocha oak overtones that just restrain themselves from overshadowing the fruit. A dry finish leaves you craving one more sip!" -Canberra Times

The fruit is harvested cool throughout the night to ensure a slow start to fermentation. As the vinification ensues, the temperature is allowed to rise, maintained at a range of between twenty five and thirty degrees. Depending on the season and quality of fruit, batches are treated to up to fourteen days on skins for the extraction of fine, medium bodied tannins. The ferment was drained and pressed into tank for a spell of malolactic fermentation. Afterwards, the wine is racked to new and used French and American oak barriques with a portion staying in tank. After twelve months, the wines are assembled and bottled, spending at least six months in bottle prior to release. Alcohol 14.0%

Dark, cherry red colour. A showcase of cool climate developed red fruit characters. Fragrances of red currant interplay with suggestions of leather and spice. On tasting, there are ripe characters of currant and plum, cherry flavours and more sweet plummy fruit integrated with cedar and vanilla, further elements of warm spice, dark chocolate, leather and leaf are expressed. Layers of plum, hints of earth and of mint, supple, dense and assertive tannins lead to a balanced, drying finish. The structure is tight, a texture of fine tannins supports the wine through the length of the palate, the flavoursome natural acidity of the fruit clings all the way through. To accompany grilled or roasted duck, beef and lamb

Very low disease pressure and perfect slow ripening conditions are the norm around the Chrismont vineyards. The fruit is harvested during the early hours of the morning and directly transported to the winery. Grapes are loaded into a membrane press where the delicate free run juice is allowed to drain using low pressures with minimal movement to reduce phenolic extraction. The juices are allowed to settle over forty eight hours to clarify before being racked to tank for fermentation. With a meagre amount of sugar remaining, the fermentation is arrested and the wine allowed to clarify. The individual batches are selected to give the right balance of texture and flavours, then assembled into the final wine. Approx 12.5%

Colour is a light straw with a hint of green. Nose of honeysuckle, lemon and lime. Citrus and tropical fruit on the palate are carried by a great acid structure giving good flavour length; an attractive wine while young, upon careful cellaring will develop subtle toast and honey complexity. "Toasty development beginning to appear on the nose. Crisp, vibrant palate with good depth of some excellent lime fruit flavours, with everything in balance!" -Winestate.com, "Pale and youthful in colour, there are aromas of citrus and lime blossom to entice the drinker further. The palate is crisp and clean, with a steely acid backbone to the citrus and slight tropical characters. Chrismont Rieslings develop slowly, thankfully!" -Border Mail

The beautifully undulating Pizzini property lies at the heart of the agriculturally rich and diverse King Valley. The site was transitioned from tobacco farming to viticulture in the late seventies and has since become synonymous with the highest quality wines. Rosato (rosé) wines are made from red grapes with a minimal controlled contact with the skins. Traditionally, old world winemakers would wake at dawn to begin picking at 8AM. By noon, the grapes had been crushed and the juices allowed to macerate on skins. The juices would be drained off after twelve hours of exposure at midnight. Thus rosato came to be referred to as vino della notte, the wine of the night. Approx 12.8%

Vibrant cherry red with light orange hues. Bouquet is lively, lifted berry fruit and jam with hints of rose petal, violet and confectionary. A palate of bright berry fruit, with lingering cranberry and strawberry characters, this full flavoured wine offers a powerful mid-palate with crisp acidity and a persistent finish. Enjoy whilst young and chilled with duck salad or garlic prawns. "Lipstick in colour and in personality, like a kiss from a sultry young debutante, exuding perfumes of rose petal and cherry, raspberry and turkish delight. The palate is equally rakish, a hint of tannin structure serves to add body and to flesh out the unctuous fruit all the way to a splendid finish!" -Ozwinenews.com
Chrismont's location at the base of the Victorian Alps is undoubtedly the most defining feature of the King Valley

Chrismont Wines incorporates the winery and cellar door operations, in addition to the estate vineyards, owned by Arnie & Jo Pizzini. The beautiful, undulating property in the heart of the agriculturally rich and diverse King Valley initially was dedicated to tobacco production in the 1960s. Chrismont founder Arnie Pizzini, along with his father Arnold, transitioned the property focus to wine grape production in the late seventies. Over the twenty years since then, the King Valley and Chrismont vineyards have become synonymous with the production of high quality wine grapes for red, white, and sparkling wine.

Arnold Pizzini grew up on a farm that had grape vines and a small orchard. He set sail for Australia in 1952 and landed in the North East Victoria town of Myrtleford, helping a migrant Italian family on their tobacco farm. It didn’t take long before a number of Arnold's brothers settled in Australia, too. The four decided to join forces to start a tobacco growing business. From a small share-farming plantation, Pizzini Brothers Pty Ltd grew into the largest tobacco growing enterprise in the Southern Hemisphere.

When the Australian Government introduced a quota system to the tobacco industry severely constraining tobacco production, Pizzini Brothers Pty Ltd was rendered bankrupt overnight. The end of the tobacco era saw the four Pizzini families divide their holdings.

Of particular interest to the region, and indeed Chrismont, are the plantings of traditional Italian varietals to the area

Each brother possessed skills in vineyard management and winemaking, gained on their vineyard in Trentino. Following discussions with John and Peter Brown in 1979, Arnold and Arnie Pizzini received a ten-year contract to supply grapes to Brown Brothers of Milawa, thus embarking on the next Pizzini era.

The first block of Chrismont's vineyards was planted in 1980 by Arnie Pizzini and his father, Arnold. The vineyards now span 250 acres. Undoubtedly, the major force behind the quality of Chrismont Wines is the soil on which the property sits, and the fact Chrismont lies in the heart of the spectacular King Valley. With a similar climate and landscape to Piemonte and Tuscany in Italy and Alsace in France, long summer days enable the grapes to achieve genuine flavour ripeness which gives lovely fruit richness to the wines, while cool nights allow elegant cool climate characters to emerge.

Enjoying the characterisation as a cool climate grape growing district, situated on the northern side of the Great Dividing Range, the King Valley has longer and warmer ripening periods during autumn than most other winegrowing regions of a similar aspect. The King Valley is distinctly similar to regions such as Tuscany and Piemonte in Italy and Alsace in France. This is the basis behind the ability of grape growers and winemakers to achieve exceptional results with Italian grape varieties.
