Elderton Estate Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre
Barossa
Available by the dozen
Elderton are a baronial Barossa estate of historical significance. The first vines were planted in 1904 by Samuel Elderton Tolley, with a view to supplying local brands. Elderton's wineworks were originally built and operated as a cannery before being converted by the Penfolds company into a functioning winemaking and storage facility. A third each of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre, sourced off the old Helbig Vineyard, from some of the younger Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre estate vines, up to forty years of age.

The Helbig property at Greenock in the west of Barossa Valley was acquired by Elderton in 2010 and is a great addition to the portfolio, yields are very low, to ensure younger vines remain healthy and produce a superior harvest that belies their age. Shiraz is typically the first to ripen, sent for a course of open top vinification before components of the later ripening Grenache and Mourvedre are treated to a traditional co fermentation. Batches are transferred to a selection of seasoned French oak puncheons for fifteen months maturation.

Bright scarlet colour. Pepper, blue fruits, anise and violet nose. Bright, elegant, textural palate, layered with black pepper and fruits, structured with richness, Mourvedre contributes earthiness and liquorice notes, Grenache brings roundness, tradewinds, blue fruits and spice.
Elderton Estate Merlot
Barossa
Available by the dozen
Elderton made use of a secret ingredient across their stately range of award winning wines for many years, they originally called on small amounts of estate grown Merlot as an essential component. Eventually the quality of Merlot itself became so exceptional that the decision was made to bottle it as a pure wine. Elderton has now been recognised as one of the finest and most consistent examples of the varietal in Australia, manifesting just how gracious a Barossa Merlot can be, a wine of controlled power, polish and identity, sublime harmony and superb length.

Elderton has only two small blocks of Merlot, situated towards the back of the vineyard on the highest point where the soils are much sandier and free draining than those which are closer to the river bed. Flourishing under favourable climes, the grapes achieve heightened levels of natural sugar, leading to a significant ripening of intense flavours. Harvested throughout the cool of night, grapes are crushed and inoculated to choice yeasts, vinified over the course of several days and pumped over twice daily for maximum extraction. The finished wine is treated to an extended maturation in a selection of mainly French oak puncheons.

Dark ruby red colour. Aromas of ripe berry and chocolate, plum spice and earthy notes, caramel and savoury toasty oak. Medium to full bodied palate, plum and cherry spice, cedar and black fruits over a lovely silken texture, Elderton shows gorgeous balance between sweet chocolatey fruit and earthy spicy tannins. A treat with grilled lamb, couscous and jus de viande.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot are harvested off old or very old vines, some were established in 1914, rooted into deep alluvial soils, harvested at optimum maturity throughout the cool of night, to a schedule determined by vineyard sampling. Following the crush, vinification is carried out in a collection of old concrete open top fermenters for approximately a week, followed by transfer to a combination of seasoned and new French oak puncheons for two years maturation.
