Smith Hooper Cabernet Merlot
Wrattonbully
Available by the dozen
Wrattonbully is blessed by some of the most desirable winegrowing terrains in Australia. Smith & Hooper are sourced entirely from two Wrattonbully estate vineyards, adjacent properties which have long been owned and operated by the Smith and Hooper families. The elements of soil and climate are so exceptional, that they elevate the noble cepage of Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon into a profound wine of distinction and finesse.

Smith & Hooper's vines are trained for optimal ripeness and depth of flavour, the plantings arew trellised with a catching wire, which provides structure and stability, allowing the grapes to receive dappled light. Cabernet is harvested at a range of ripeness levels, Merlot is picked earlier. Parcels are treated to static fermenters, pumped over four times daily. Upon completion, batches are filled to a selection of mostly French oak hogsheads for a year and a half before the final assemblage.

Dense red in colour, with crimson hues. Plummy on the nose, exhuding aromas of intense fruit, predominantly violets and black currants with vanillin overtones. Powerful palate with excellent structure, sweetly scented oak and an integration of rich fruit within a wine of velvet textures, length and fine balance. The strength of Cabernet, the softness of Merlot and richness of Wrattonbully.

The term Terra rossa means red earth, a rich, free draining soil that is considered by many as the viticultural equivalent of discovering gold. Beneath the strata of red earth at Wrattonbully sits a layer of ancient limestone, a winegrower's dream as it allows free drainage of water, yet ensures vine roots stay close to the surface, putting natural stress on the vine and limiting its vigor and yield. An attractive wine upon release and destined to develop complexity, just perfect alongside crispy skinned pork belly. In sticky sauce of course.

The art of making wine from Merlot requires a careful avoidance of any over extractions of tannin from the fruit and seeds. Smith & Hooper choose to vinify in static fermenters while continually tasting the wine as it evolves. The skins are eventually pressed when the requisite structure and palate weight can be achieved without any distasteful tannin hardness. In pursuit of these soft tannins, Smith & Hooper are judicious in their barrel selection, maturing the finished wine for up to a year in a combination of new and older French oak hogsheads and barriques.

Bright scarlet colour. Eenchanting and full bouquet of red fruits and violet, berries and bay leaf notes to complement the central core of plum fuit. Medium bodied showing raspberry fruit and oak spice finishing with light silky tannins.

The Tempranillo of Rioja Alavesa are enjoyed throughout the world. The quality of Rioja Alavesa Tempranillo is due for the most part to a fortuitous confluence of terroir and clime, clay calcareous soils, a highly favourable semi dry growing season and protection from north winds by the Sierra de Cantabria. Bodegas Solar Viejo was established 1937 within the medieval town of Laguardia. Tempranillo wines share a long history with the ancient hamlet and almost all the town's buildings have their own underground wine cellars. It is here that old world winemaking traditions meet state of the art oenology, translating into a perfectly integrated Tempranillo wine, after a term of ageing in a selection of seasoned oak barrels.

Deep garnet red. An engaging nose of complex red fruit aromas, tomato and five spice before notes of vanilla and caramel oak. A soft palate showing Tempranillo liquorice characters, followed by fine fruit flavours and light balsamic notes. The tannins are balanced and fine, supported by ripe dark berry acidity, the finish is elegantly oaked. To accompany hard cheese, casserole or barbecued meats.

Some Young Punks Naked On Roller Skates Shiraz
Clare Valley
Available by the dozen
The ethos is simple, to create charismatic wines that are true to what Some Young Punks think wine is about. Inspired by images as bright and as intense as the wines, Some Young Punks draw inspiration from low brow literature of the pulp fiction era. Each wine, each vintage and each label is a moment that will never come again, a winemaker should only ever promise to be consistently good, not just consistent. Each time Punks make a wine it may be the last, if it isn't worthy of being the last then it will not wear Roller Skates or be dressed in Some Young name.

Some Young Punks Passion Has Red Lips
McLaren Vale
Conceptually, an adaptation of the pulp novel Sin on Wheels, realized through an equitable coupling of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. Fruit is harvested off fully mature vines, crushed into fermenters and treated to maceration for the optimal extraction of colour and tannins. A course of vinification on skins and pressing into a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques, for the completion of malolactic and term of maturation. This is Passion, a monster bigger than the three of us that leads us to soapbox, even to grandstand and sometimes pass out on the couch.

Inky ruby colour. Complex aromas of vivid red and dark berries, pungent herbs and fresh flowers. Round and seductive, with silky raspberry and blackberry preserve flavors braced by nervy minerality. Stains the palate with energetic red berry flavors, no intrusive tannins to get in the way of the fruit. There is always the danger that while drinking a bottle of Punks, you may also be pushed to acts of complete random.
