133 - 144 of 193 Pure Sauvignon Blancs
Saint Clair Block 1 Foundation Sauvignon Blanc
Marlborough
Available in cartons of six
Pioneer Block One lies just east of Blenheim township, it was once part of the Wairau flood plain and accumulated layers of idyllic, deep free draining soils over the millennia. This is the vineyard where Saint Clair discovered the remarkable quality of fruit which was to become the world famous Wairau Reserve. It is often one of the very last blocks to be harvested, its mineral intensity and rich salty finish makes a lengthy, memorable wine.

Vines on Block One are planted to fertile, pebbled alluvial silts overlying sand subsoils. The lie of land is rather flat and the proximity to the coast makes it a cooler site, with slower ripening than the majority of inland Marlborough. Carefully monitored throughout the ripening period, serious attention is given to determining the precise time for vintage. Harvesting takes place during the cool of evening as grapes achieve maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness. Fruit is pressed off as quickly as possible to minimize skin contact, juices are cold settled and vinified through the action of choice yeast in controlled fermenters at cool temperatures to retain power and intensity of fruit.

Pale straw hues. Powerful and intense aromas of blackcurrant, gooseberry and passionfruit, fragrant with notes of freshly cut grass. A silky textured palate showing luscious ripe grapefruit and green guava flavours, grapefruits and underlying mineral characters. Chalky in texture before a long, lingering finish, ,rinking beautifully right now alongside salmon or live cooked mussels.

The strength of St Clair's Sauvignon Blanc lies in the selection of fruit and urgent handling of the wine. Grapes are sourced from a selection of vineyard, located in the Dillons Point and lower Wairau sub regions. Each block is harvested at maximum flavour maturity and physiological ripeness. Fruit is transported to the winery and pressed off immediately to minimise skin contact or juice deterioration. After settling, each batch is vinified at cool temperatures through a variety of choice yeasts to retain fruit flavour and freshness. The parcels are assessed for quality and only those components best exhibiting the potential to contribute quality and complexity are included into the finished wine.

Established in 1982, Scotchmans Hill has become a producer of some of Australia's most complex, elegant and consistent wines. The vineyards are located on Mt Bellarine which was named by the Scottish immigrants who settled the area in the 1840s. Sauvignon Blanc clones F4V6 and H5V10 from vines up to twenty five years of age planted to sandy loam and volcanic clays over broken basalt subsoils, trellised to vertical shoot positioning, yielding 3.0kg per vine and 3.0tn per acre. Grapes are crushed, de-stemmed and pressed into temperature controlled tanks, inoculated and vinified at 13C for a fortnight, followed by lees contact without any exposure to oak.

Pale straw with green hues. Lifted and perfumed bouquet of tropical fruits, gooseberries, passionfruit with nettle notes. A tight, mineral palate showing tropical fruits, with passionfruit, gooseberry flavours and a hint of nettles on the mid-palate. This is balanced by clean fresh acid with a lingering aftertaste. Scotchmans Hill should be enjoyed in its youth while best displaying its fresh varietal character.

Fruit is harvested to a timetable determined by ripeness, ensuring that grapes arrive at the winery in a cool and fresh condition, preserving the classic Marlborough characters which are the signature of Secret Stone. The primary objective is to protect fresh vibrant characters. Grapes are de-stemmed, pressed and chilled to 10C or 12C before a gentle pressing. Juices are cold settled for two to three days and racked. Following fermentation, the wine is chilled to zero degrees prior to racking and determining the final cuvee. Crafted with minimum intervention to capture and retain the exquisite personality of Marlborough vineyards, the natural expressions of fruit and racy acidity deliver balance, backbone and length.

Light straw colour, hints of green. Attractive array of floral characters with fresh and fragrant tropical fruit notes, banana, passionfruit and gooseberry. Fresh, crisp and lively palate with mineral overtones and great length. Intense with grapefruit and limes, lanolin and talc, snow pea and green veg. Eighteen parcels Sauvignon Blanc and two of Semillon are sourced off three estate vineyards. The fully certified organic fruit is hand picked off two biodynamically managed terroirs, the upper terraces of Noa vineyard, on Waimakiriri soils of alluvial origin, the balance from Raupo Creek where soils are rich and clay based. Twenty different batches are pressed and separately handled to provide a range of options when determining the final wine. Most are treated to a wild indigenous yeast vinification, some parts are richly fermented in a selection of seasoned French oak barriques. After eight months, components are tasted and assembled into an exquisite, elegant style.

Light citrus/ straw in colour. Aromas of grapefruit and lime are underpinned by a chalky mineral complexity. The palate is finely textured with characters of gooseberry, zesty citrus and mineral flavours combined with a slight creaminess. A firm acidity helps to draw out the finish. Drinking well now as it continues to develop great concentration with evolving truffle and caramel characters.
